What Good Progression Feels Like In A Mobile RPG

July 13, 2026 · Lena Vogt

We play a lot of RPGs, and the ones that stick share a common trait: their progression respects your time. You should feel a little stronger after every session, not just closer to an artificial wall.

Ashen Covenant does this well. Its level curve is smooth, and each new ability changes how you fight rather than just bumping a number. That's the difference between grinding and growing.

The worst offenders lock meaningful upgrades behind long waits. When a game asks you to wait rather than play, it's telling you it doesn't trust its own gameplay to keep you.

My advice: try any RPG for two or three sessions and ask whether the second felt more powerful than the first. If it did, you've probably found a keeper.
